Climate Change is the major challenge agriculture is facing during this century. While the world population is growing, drought is becoming a serious concern in more and more regions of the world and adversely affects yields. Among the options to mitigate the negative effects of drought on crop production, scientists found that plant nutrients play a key role. Research focuses on their function in stress physiology and it has shown that a balanced plant nutrition helps plants to mitigate negative effects of drought stress. Nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, sulphur and boron also help increasing water use efficiency and help the plants to longer withstand adverse conditions.

Prof. Dr. Klaus Dittert is the scientific director of the Institute of Applied Plant Nutrition (IAPN) and director of the Division of Plant Nutrition and Crop Physiology in the Department of Crop Sciences at the University of Göttingen, Germany. In his research he focuses on the effect of nutrient deficiency on plant physiology under limited water conditions.
